Adjoa Courtney

Adjoa Courtney has been a hair and makeup artist for over 10 years. Coming from a household where her mother wore very short natural hair and never made hair and style a priority, she had no choice but to become the pioneer that she is today. Given that her hair was a different texture that required low maintenance, she became focused on defining her own image.  From childhood, Adjoa has always been very artistic, with a passion for color and drawing; thriving in areas of art and design. In addition, she has always had an eye for innovative fashion and panache, which transpires to not just her individual style but allows her to use that creative genius to transform others. At the age of 16, Adjoa performed her first makeover which proved to be only the beginning of her love affair with makeup, skin care, and fashion. While in beauty school her excitement for makeup flourished as did her skills in both hair and makeup.  Over the years, she’s acquired makeup artistry position with a number of prestigious cosmetic companies, including  Chanel,Stila, Mac, Prescriptives, Benefit, and Amazing cosmetics. With each position she developed new techniques, new looks and a broad spectrum of possibilities.

In 2007, Ms. Courtney began to freelance under the name Make Me by Joya; as a result her clientele increased significantly and that in turn diversified the type of clients she served.  Since that time she has done everything from weddings and runway to photo shoots, music videos, editorial, and celebrities. Freelancing is her preference as it allows her to maintain the integrity of her creativity while she expounds upon her skills. Adjoa finds freelancing to be challenging as it has forced her to universalize her techniques to accommodate her broad array of clientele. She has experience with men and women of all backgrounds and ethnicities, as well as skin types, tones and textures. Having familiarized herself with multiple cosmetic brands, she is able to mix and match the various lines to best fit the model. Adjoa has gone above and beyond in developing her skill set, having the know how to do all types of make-up from full face, to subtle highlighting features, facial and body art and design, dramatic nightlife art, and glamour makeup, so that she is able to exceed the expectations of her clients. She is also an educator, providing guidance and instruction on makeup application and skin care to her models, clients, business seminars and YouTube tutorials. Ms. Courtney has even managed to overcome the objections of the Know-It-Alls and create Glamour Girls out of Plain Janes. She views every face a blank canvas where the possibilities for greatness are endless.

A portion of Adjoa’s client list is made of up private clientele whom she caters to with a combination of regularly scheduled homes visits, make-up application for prestigious events, makeup education parties with their associates and traveling to their special engagements. Adjoa has built a superb reputation for herself with her unique ability to bring to fruition the visions of her clients, accommodating services and punctuality.
